BLESSED LIFE – IEMELIF NEW FRONTIER MISSION 2014 Introduction The story of the spread of IEMELIF congregations in various places is replete with interesting experiences of the men and women who gave themselves – their time and resources – to the service of the Church that the Kingdom of God might be preached in the Philippines.

MANILA AREA – The IEMELIF congregations in Manila were established almost instantaneously. They represented a large part of the Methodist members who joined their secessionist pastors in the new Church. (Methodist Episcopal Church, Board of Foreign Missions, Annual Report, 1909, p.349.) TONDO, MANILA – The very first IEMELIF congregation was established in Tondo. It consisted of about 600 seceders from the ST. PAUL’S METHODIST CHURCH.

They were led by the KAPISANANG KATOTOHANAN members, who spared no effort and resources in organizing the congreagation, with Pastor NICOLAS ZAMORA as their pastor. In the beginning they met as a “HOUSE CHURCH” in the home of the spouses ARSENIO BARTOLOME and NICOLASA FELICIANO at No.17 Moriones Street, Tondo.

Later services were held in various “MOVIE HOUSES” in Tondo (TEATRO RIZAL on Ylaya Street, CINE KATUBUSAN on Moriones Street, and CINE GLORIA on Sande Street) Until 1929 (20 years after) when the TEMPLO SENTRAL (Cathedral) was built on Sande Street (now Nicolas Zamora Street) The Tondo congreagation never had a permanent meeting place of its own since their priority was to use their modest financial resources on evangelization and the propagation of the IEMELIF CHURCH.

Nevertheless, a large portion of the construction fund for the CENTRAL TEMPLE, built later, came from the generous contributions of the members of the Tondo congregation.

Besides, the congregation of Tondo had always been and continues to be under the direct pastorate of the General Superintendent. (Ruben F. Trinidad, A Monument to Religious Nationalism, pp. 144-45) Change is hard, but to not change will make the future even harder. It’s time to step up to the challenge to be witnesses. It’s time, as the old hymn says, to “be done with lesser things.” It’s time for the church to rise up.

THE CATHEDRAL OF THE NEW MILLENIUM DOUGLAS BRIGGS, the director of the Los Angeles Film Studies Center, has some very interesting opinions about the place and importance of movies in our culture.

According to Briggs, THE CATHEDRAL OF THE PRESENT GENERATION IS THE CINEPLEX (THOSE HUGE STRUCTURES THAT CONTAIN TWENTY OR MORE MOVIE THEATERS WITHIN A COMPLEX AND USUALLY INCLUDE RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS.) Through the 1970’s the church played a role in American culture.

It was the place where people gathered and shared their beliefs and emotions with each other. It was a place that united individual families and communities, and the nation shared views and values. But in the last two decades, the Cineplex has usurped the role of the church.

More seats and Bigger Place to worship…

Now people gathered and socialized there. More significantly, the values that are adopted by our culture are those proclaimed on the screen. While society used to find its principle in the Bible, now it looks to the entertainment industry for truth.

Whether it is via films, television, cable, Internet, magazines, or music, the entertainment industry provides the content that Americans absorb as their source of guidance. MESSIAH of the Marketplace I simply argue that the cross be raised again at the center of the MARKETPLACE as well as on the steeple of the church…. That Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles, but on A CROSS BETWEEN TWO THIEVES; on THE TOWN’s GARBAGE HEAP; at a CROSSROAD SO COSMOPOLITAN that they had to write his title in Hebrew and Latin and in Greek; at the kind of place where CYNICS talk smut, and THIEVES curse, and SOLDIERS gamble.

Because that is where he died. And that is what he died about … that is where churchmen SHOULD BE and what churchmen SHOULD BE ABOUT. — George McLeod APOSTOLIC DIRECTION TEACHES: Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have VOLUNTARILY BECOME A SERVANT TO ANY AND ALL in order to reach a wide range of people: religious, nonreligious, meticulous moralists, loose-living immoralists, the defeated, the demoralized- whoever.

I didn’t take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ- but I ENTERED THEIR WORLD and tried to EXPERIENCE THINGS FROM THEIR POINT OF VIEW. I’ve BECOME JUST ABOUT EVERY SORT OF SERVANT THERE IS in my attempts to lead those I meet into a GOD-SAVED LIFE. I did this because of the Message, I didn’t just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it! 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 (Message Version)
