Davao team wins Cebu Pacific Backpacking Challenge

Juan for Fun Team Juanton members Geia, Dominic and Chin take home the grand prize of one-year travel-all-you-can passes to Cebu Pacific’s local and international short-haul destinations.

Three graduating college students from Davao City won the Juan For Fun (JFF) 2017 Backpacking Challenge, each taking home a Cebu Pacific Travel All-You-Can pass for unlimited local and international short-haul destinations for one year, plus pocket money from co-presenters GetGo and Union Bank. The three students—18-year-old Gloria Andrea Mendoza; and 19-year-olds Christian Dominic Ang and Chyn Ira Crisostomo, comprised Team Juanton in the annual event presented by Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ leading carrier.

Now on its sixth year, the Juan For Fun Backpacking Challenge brought teams of young adventurers on an epic, seven-day fun race across the country, with P40,000 in pocket money, Boreas backpacks, and Oppo camera phones. This year’s JFF run had the final five teams locked in over 300 activities, done in over 25 locations, in just seven days—the most number of activities registered in Juan for Fun history.

Team Juanton beat four other teams—Team Phun of Bacolod City; Team Malackai of Baguio City; Team Patsada of Cagayan de Oro and Team Barbie from Metro Manila, with an adventure travel itinerary that covered Dumaguete and Siquijor—destinations never before visited by JFF contestants. They ventured to the waters with island-hopping and scuba diving before proceeding to Cebu and then to Legazpi. They also took home minor prizes for the Chippy Kada Challenge and Smart Challenge. The Davaoeño team is also the youngest among all the competitors.

Throughout the seven day-adventure travel challenge, the top five JFF 2017 sought to experience the Philippines’ vibrant cultural tapestry as seen in the regions’ different modes of transportation, specialty dishes, and local practices, transporting their followers on social media with enthralling images.

“The Philippines is a beautiful country and many Filipinos have not had the opportunity to explore their own country. Juan For Fun is our way of advocating travel within our own country—especially for young Filipinos. There is much to see and do in the country and this one of the reasons why we continue to expand and offer flights to destinations in the Philippines. We want to make air travel easy, affordable and accessible for everyJuan,” said Charo Logarta-Lagamon, Cebu Pacific Air corporate communications director, as she congratulated the finalists.

Team Patsada of Cagayan de Oro came in second, with friendship nurtured on the road, after visiting Coron, Cebu, Bacolod, and Davao. Team members Ron, Rene, and James are now intent to see more of the Philippines by travelling. In third place was Team Barbie, with members Marlou, Adonis, and Carl posting photos and videos frolicking along the shore of Puerto Princesa. Donning their signature straw hats, the team paddled their way to Siargao and Boracay before heading back to Manila. On the other hand, Team Phun of Bacolod City and Team Malackai of Baguio City shared fourth place. TeamPhun members Bryan, Alfed, and Josh boosted their team work as they made their way from Cebu to Davao and Camiguin. They wowed their followers with Amsterdam-like views, creative lighting effects on a field of roses, trick eye exhibits and natural wonders, showing travelers they don’t need to wander far to see delightful views. The boys of Team Malackai—Kahel, Ian, and John—were pumped up with their “great outdoors” itinerary. After winning the Coaches’ Choice Award, they went off to Bohol, Cebu, Surigao and Surigao del Sur to find the best experience whether in the air, on land, or at sea.

This year’s travel content expert coaches also rallied the teams with their travel tips and backpacker challenges. YouTube Vlogger Wil Dasovich, Becoming Filipino advocate Kyle Jennermann, Beautiful Destination Social Media Strategist Ren Sapitan, international blogger of JustOnewayTIcket.com Sabrina Iovino, and returning coach and travel writer Jude Bacalso were onboard, urging the five finalists to have the most epic ride with Cebu Pacific.

The Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2017 has Boreas Gear as the official travel gear and Oppo camera phone as the official camera. The challenge is also endorsed by the Department of Tourism.

Cebu Pacific moves toward paperless cockpit

Cebgo pilots equipped with iPads for EFBs

July 20, 2017 – Leading Philippine airline Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) has started to roll-out 5th generation iPad devices for its pilots, as it begins to invest in paperless cockpit technology. The iPad will contain the pilots’ Electronic Flight Bags (EFB), an information management device that will help flight crews perform tasks necessary to fly and navigate an aircraft.

CEB has started to equip pilots of its ATR aircraft fleet with the iPad EFBs last week. The ATRs are flown under CEB subsidiary Cebgo and are mainly used for inter-island routes across the Philippines. An initial 70 pilots were equipped with the iPad EFBs, with the carrier targeting to equip all 120 ATR pilots by July 13, 2017.

On the other hand, another 700 CEB pilots, or those flying the Airbus fleet, will be equipped with the iPad EFBs over the next few weeks. The investment in the iPad EFBs forms part of the PHP24 Billion capital expenditure (CAPEX) earmarked by CEB for 2017.

“CEB operates one of the world’s youngest fleet of ATR 72-600 aircraft, which is probably the most technologically advanced turbo-prop currently in commercial service.  To complement the ATR, our investment in the iPad EFB aligns with our goal of operational excellence through the introduction of systems that enhance safety and efficiency in flight operations. With the EFB iPad, aircraft performance software and aeronautical charts are readily available, flight plans are constantly updated, and aircraft documentation and procedures are easily accessed; this is important when time critical decisions need to be made and executed in the flight deck,” said Capt. Sam Avila, Cebu Pacific Vice President for Flight Operations.

“iPad EFBs will also help us reduce our environmental footprint and manage our operational costs. Traditionally, flight manuals, charts, and other documentation used by pilots are all on paper— these paper documents weigh anywhere from 30 to 50 pounds. Going paperless will reduce our cumulative aircraft fuel burn, and consequently our carbon emissions.”

The iPad EFBs display a variety of aviation data such as weather patterns, maps and charts; and perform basic calculations like fuel consumption. These are also enhanced with navigation and situational awareness capabilities to simplify preparation and in-flight procedures, which are critical during times of high congestion or poor visibility. Moreover, CEB’s iPad EFBs come with a docking system that allow for seamless and fast synching and downloading of data to multiple devices.

Initial estimates indicate that CEB would save an estimated 50,000 sheets of paper per year from the full implementation and use of the iPad EFBs. Added to the reduced weight of hard copy manuals in the cockpit, this would translate to a 17 ton reduction in Carbon (CO2) emissions and a five (5) ton cut in fuel consumption.

CEB and Cebgo fly to 37 domestic and 26 international destinations, with over 104 routes spanning Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and USA. The CEB network operates flights out of six strategically placed hubs in the Philippines: Clark, Davao, Kalibo, Cebu, Iloilo and Manila.

CEB boasts of one of the youngest fleets in the world, with a total of 61 aircraft with an average age of 4.99 years. The CEB fleet is comprised of four Airbus A319, 36 Airbus A320 and eight Airbus A330; while the Cebgo fleet is composed of eight ATR 72-500, and five ATR 72-600 aircraft. Between 2017 and 2022, CEB expects delivery of seven A321CEO (Current Engine Option), 11 ATR 72-600, and 32 Airbus A321NEO (New Engine Option) aircraft.

AirAsia’s super low fares to Bohol and bargain hotel and tour deals are up for grabs!

Bohol is moving to become the must go destination in the Philippines as it launches   new and exciting tourist destinations with rock bottom prices for airfares, hotels and resorts during a travel fair to be held in Glorietta Mall on Dec. 8-10.

Bohol provincial governor Edgar Chatto said the province will also formally launch its new branding “Behold…BOHOL,” which positions the province as a destination that exudes a sense of awe in every visitor.

The three day event is the first time ever that tourism sector in Bohol comes together in a massive campaign to entice tourists to visit. Meanwhile, the new branding “Behold…BOHOL” was developed with the help of CNN’s branding expert Anita Mendiratta.  Bohol is the first province that benefited from an outreach program of CNN.

AirAsia, the leading budget airline in the Asian region, is the exclusive airline partner for the campaign and will offer seat sale.  The airline that has been awarded the Skytrax’s World’s Best Low Cost Carrier for six consecutive years is also committed to offer year-round low fares for flights between Manila – Tagbilaran (Bohol) and Manila – Cebu.

At least 50% discount in accommodation, tours and other travel essentials in Bohol will be offered during the three-day travel fair. Boholano products will likewise be on sale.

The travel fair will open in a grand program featuring the world-famous Loboc Children’s Choir. The chorale group will have a nightly concert during the three-day event.

Tarsier

Bohol province is dubbed as the eco-cultural tourism capital with its fascinating  Chocolate Hills, pristine and white sand beaches in Panglao and  Anda.  It is also home to the well-loved Tarsier, considered the smallest and oldest primate in the world.

“We want to develop Bohol as the tourism superpower and a top holiday destination in the Philippines,” said Bohol governor Edgar Chatto.

He said the launch of the ‘Behold… BOHOL’  aims to promote the province as a complete tourist destination because every town has a unique tourist attraction to offer to visitors.

Aside from the iconic destinations, the province is surrounded by caves, tranquil rivers, fascinating water falls, marine sanctuaries, mangroves and diving sites.

Chatto said Bohol is now promoting the powdery white sand beaches of Anda, as the next tourist destination.  Road and infrastructure access to Anda are underway through the convergence program of Department of Tourism and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) that seeks to connect airports to tourist destinations.

Anda is a must visit in Bohol for its  unique and  wider coastlines making it a perfect destination both for relaxing walk on the beach or water sports activities.

The town is also home to the Lamanok Mystical Island and is fast becoming a popular destinations. Lamanok can be reached within a two-hour drive from the capital, Tagbilaran. The island has a rich lush mangrove protecting the community from flooding, pollution and water surge. It hosts some mystical caves where ancient Boholanons bury their loved ones in jars.

Governor Chatto said Bohol is also home to Asia’s largest mangrove forest called Banacon located north of the municipality of Getafe. It has a total of 425 hectares with only 15 hectares dry land and the rest are extensive mangrove plantation.

In a press statement, the Governor credited the strong support and cooperation of  tourism stakeholders in Bohol in promoting the new tourist destinations of the province.

“ The strong partnership between the local government and the private tourism stakeholders, a well equipped manpower with innate hospitality as well as the rich natural, cultural and historical attractions of Bohol are the three main factors why we are confident to become a tourism superpower,” said Chatto.

AirAsia, the Filipino Low Cost Carrier is fully supporting the ‘Behold…BOHOL’  campaign by offering its lowest possible rates for tourists visiting Bohol.
